Global Digital Compact
The Global Digital Compact (GDC) was proposed in the United Nations Secretary-General’s Common Agenda report to outline shared principles for “an open, free, and secure digital future for all.”
These principles will be presented to Heads of State and governments through the Pact of the Future during the high-level Summit of the Future, which will take place from 18 to 19 September 2024.
The Common Agenda report proposes challenges to be considered, including digital connectivity, Internet fragmentation, data protection, human rights online, and promoting a trustworthy Internet.
As part of the consultative process, the United Nations heard from everyone everywhere—individuals, groups, associations, organizations, entities—on what they want to see in the Global Digital Compact.
Internet Society Contributions to GDC
The Internet Society welcomes this opportunity to contribute to the GDC by engaging in numerous informal consultations, deep dive discussions, and written submissions since April 2023.
In our submissions, we emphasize the importance of creating enabling environments that improve Internet access, particularly resisting the proliferation of initiatives and proposals that could fragment the Internet. Such fragmentation can substantially diminish the Internet’s opportunities for people and society. Advocate to resist Internet fragmentation and uphold the open, global Internet.
Additionally, our submissions underscore the necessity of collaborative efforts among stakeholders to guarantee the Internet’s future as a force for good for everyone. As an organization committed to playing our part in this process, we believe that by having all stakeholders work together in their respective roles, we can create an Internet that is genuinely open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy for everyone.
